Sonic Frontiers delivers a delicious taste of the early 2000s ‘Adventure’ experience
In what could be considered an early version of DLC , Sonic & Knuckles was an expansion to Sonic 3. What was interesting about this game’s cartridge is that you could attach Sonic 3 to the top of it, which added additional levels. It was also possible to insert Sonic 2 and play as Knuckles in that game. Other than seeing how fast Sonic could run, this was a solid game filled with imaginative, multi-tiered levels.
In 1992, Sega approached the American Broadcasting Company about producing two television series—”a syndicated show for the after-school audience” and a Saturday-morning cartoon—based on Sonic. Kalinske “had seen how instrumental the launch of He-Man and Sonic the Masters of the Universe cartoon series was to the success of the toyline” during his time at Mattel and believed that success could be recreated using Sonic. The two cartoons, the syndicated Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and ABC’s Sonic the Hedgehog (1993–1994), were produced by DIC Entertainment.
- Sonic Origins made fans pay for extra animations and challenge levels, while Sonic Colors Ultimate locked music and gloves behind paid DLC.
- During the Knuckles play through one survives the destruction of the Death Egg and serves as the boss at end of each level.
- While this playable Ocarina won’t summon a horse or slow down time, it does let them play their favorite Zelda tunes.
Quickly earning a reputation as a micro-managing perfectionist, it was not unusual for him to be heard arguing with his co-workers over some seemingly insignificant coding detail. As a trip down memory lane, Sonic Generations is a wonderful nostalgia trip. Generations is a love letter to all things Sonic, and is nothing short of wonderful. Sonic Adventure saw players take control of a bunch of different characters, some old and some new, as they found themselves embroiled in a plot by Dr Eggman to revive an ancient monster by the name of Chaos. And so began the tradition of Eggman eventually being hoisted by his own petard as the very thing he’s trying to revive or create becomes too powerful for him to control.

Maybe Sonic games are good, actually, and I’ve missed out on decades of fun. With little time left in my demo, I sequester my doubts and race off into the sands – there’s a lot to discover in Sonic Frontiers, and I’m just getting started. Fast forward 20 years, and I’m sitting in a behind-closed-doors Gamescom appointment to play Sonic Frontiers for the first time.
The gameplay for this title was tweaked from other 3D Sonic games where this was an auto runner and the player needs to steer Sonic to avoid obstacles. A decent idea but the Wii’s motion controls would work against you most of the time. Especially when you need to make a precise turn or the sensor bar wouldn’t register the motion to perform a Homing Attack.
He wasn’t called Sonic
A redesign made him cuddlier and more appealing to an all-ages audience, while his new name, Sonic, better reflected the character’s signature speed. Like Mario, Sonic leaped from platform to platform, collecting coins—or rings—while fighting enemies and scoring power-ups. Unlike Mario’s, Sonic’s world was full of curved surfaces and slopes, multi-tiered pathways, and an unrelenting pace. The main theme of the game, which would play, among others, on the title screen, would be reused in several subsequent games in the Sonic series and would remain as its hallmark. In addition, another popular song from the game would be the theme for Green Hill Zone, which would be reused and remixed for several other games in the series.
The book even features a foreword by the game’s director, Naoki Yoshida. Although we wish the light were slightly brighter, we’re still obsessed with it and think it’s a unique gift that any gamer would love. Funko’s vinyl figurines offer something for every type of gamer, even if you’re not a Halo fan! Pick from Crash Bandicoot, Sonic the Hedgehog, your favorite Mortal Kombat fighter, and everything in between. The majority of its pages are visual and attempt to capture what Nintendo’s first 16-bit console had to offer. It features more than 200 games and has gorgeous illustrations of box art, concept drawings, and level designs.
He comes from a science writing background, having studied paleomammalogy, biological anthropology, and the history of science and technology. After hours, you can find him practicing taekwondo or doing deep dives on classic sci-fi. We don’t know how long this particular deal will be in stock, or whether it will spread to the Xbox and Switch versions of the game.
